Fat Dog 100 Relay Offers Beautiful Trails

December 23, 2009

Listen up all you potential ultrarunners.  There’s a new relay in British Columbia that is offering you the chance to tackle the ultra lifestyle with a few friends this summer.

If you’ve ever thought about running trails but have been afraid to try, you might want to check out the Fat Dog 100 in British Columbia.  It’s a new relay (and a 100 mile ultra with a 100k option) offering 100 miles of challenging trails, climbs and stunning wilderness for teams of up to 6 team members.  Teams will begin in Cathedral Provincial Park and travel through Manning Park, over Hope Pass and into the Skagit Valley before finishing at Lightning Lake.  . Because this is a trail relay, teams won’t be able to support from the side of the road in usual relay fashion, but the payoff is that you have a chance to run on the trails and then commiserate with your friends.

Stunning views high in the BC mountains

Not only that, the relay is very affordable.  Registration is just $250 per team for up to 6 team members, which includes a finishers shirt with a very cool logo.  There will be approximately 10 aid stations along the way, though most will be at the exchange points.  If you’ve ever enjoyed an aid station at an ultra, you’ll know that they go above and beyond your usual race fare – the aid station food can be worth the price of entry alone.

One lucky team member even gets to cross a river...

The race finishes lakeside at Lightning Lake, perfect for soaking tired legs.  Camping is available at both the start and finish, and hotels are within 45 minutes of the finish line for a post race celebration.

So if the trails are calling your name, be sure to check out the Fat Dog 100.  It just might be the relay you’re looking for this summer.
