Hold on to your running shoes, folks, because there is a slew of new relays being announced for 2010. Perhaps everyone is planning to capitalize on the hype generated by the new Hood to Coast documentary set to hit theaters next year, or maybe we are seeing new races because race directors are just realizing how fun these races can be. Regardless, I have four new relays that I will be announcing this week, and I imagine that this may just be the beginning.
So here goes the first new relay to be announced:
Up until now, the runners in the south haven’t had many relays to call their own. That will change in 2010 as South Carolina’s new Palmetto 200 Relay joins the ranks of Georgia’s inaugural Southern Odyssey (October) and the Southern Blue Relay (April) as one of three overnight relay options for the region.
Enjoy the scenic byways of South Carolina
Scheduled for April 30 to May 1, 2010, the Palmetto 200 Relay will begin in Congaree National Park, near Columbia, South Carolina, and travel approximately 200 miles through gorgeous cotton fields, past lakes, across the Ravenel Bridge, through historic Charleston and finally finishing along the coastal waters of Folly Beach, South Carolina. The course is still in development, so race maps are not yet available, but it sounds like it is going to be a very scenic route. The race will finish at the Folly Beach Holiday Inn, making for a fun end to the relay.

The race is managed by two runners from South Carolina who love to run and who love endurance racing. After participating in several relays around the country themselves, they are organizing a race in their own backyard to capture the unique beauty of the region. They are excited to share their enthusiasm for the format with runners who may be new to relay racing.
Registration for teams of 12 is $1200, while ultra teams of 4 – 6 are $600. Register between now and February 1, 2010, and you’ll save 25% off your registration fee – so that’s only $900 for a team of 12, or $450 for an ultra team. Only 100 teams will be accepted for this inaugural running, so register early to guarantee your place.
Be sure to check out their website at www.palmetto200.com for more details.
Now I just have to figure out how I am going to get access to unlimited time and money so that I can try all of these fantastic new races!
